A PLACE OF UNDERSTANDING

OVERVIEW

There are all kinds of ideas and assumptions out there in the world. Language gets used for regular conversation, propaganda and poetry. Out of this mix of conflicting claims and natural language, scientists and scholars need to build special contexts called theories to do the serious work of science and scholarship.

This presentation covers the progressive development starting with basic rules and standards for all theoretical development work [Place] followed by new theoretical foundations for math, geometry, and physics which satisfy these standards. These theoretical foundations compete with existing academic foundations (such as they are). It was first presented to the public starting October 21, 2003 on Boston public access cable channel 23 and has been edited since then.

Place of Understanding [Place] avoids the philosophically controversial matter of existence, and concerns itself with whether something is present or absent in a given setting. Place determines that a theory should start with a blank context, introduce meanings from natural language via axiom, enforce some needed restrictions on initial, elementary meanings, and comply with its common-sense rules for definition, construction and communication.
